What Parents Need to Know about Nutritional Supplements for Their Children

What Supplements Will Benefit Your Child?

I get a lot of questions from parents asking me if nutritional supplements are important for their children. Every child has unique needs however there are a couple of supplements that I recommend and give to my own children for general wellness.

1. DHA

DHA is an omega 3 fatty acid and is considered to be a good fat. It is critical in the development and function of the brain, eyes, and central nervous system during infancy and childhood. DHA may also play a role in managing behavior and mood. A deficiency of DHA can negatively impact the development of function of the brain and eyes. Studies show that children with higher DHA levels have better mental and visual function. In addition, children who were breastfed tend to have higher IQ scores and better academic performance than those who were formula-fed. This is believed to be partly related to the high DHA content of breast milk.

2. Probiotics

The gut is populated with billions of bacteria, and the good bacteria keeps us healthy and supports a healthy immune system. For children they can be particularly helpful in relieving constipation, acid reflux, diarrhea symptoms and gas pains. Some research also indicates that they help to manage eczema as related to gut health. A probiotic is particularly important if your child has been on rounds of antibiotics for treatment of various illnesses.

3. Plant Based Multivitamin

If your child is eating a lot of healthy, unprocessed foods, fruits and vegetables, they get all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need to grow up healthy with strong immune systems. However with busy lives and sometimes uncooperative eaters most children can benefit from a supplemental vitamin, mineral and phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are derived from plants and act as antioxidants helping to prevent diseases such as cancer. They naturally protect us from environmental toxins that can cause disease. They boost immunity, reduce inflammation, repair DNA damage, eliminate toxins and alter the metabolism of hormones. Good quality phytonutrient supplements include a combination of fruit and vegetable powders and extracts, such as tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach, kale, onions and blueberries.

It’s particularly important to stick to high grade, quality tested supplements. Most over the counter supplements are poorly regulated so check with a professional before selecting supplements.
